Africa-Press – Kenya. Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has revealed the story behind his iconic fez-style red hat, a fashion accessory that has become his political trademark.
Barasa, known for donning the striking cylindrical, flat-top cap both in Parliament and at public rallies, says it is not just a fashion statement but also carries special significance.
According to him, the hat is designed and supplied by a “gracious” Ghanaian fashion enthusiast Paulina George who is married to a Kenyan.
“Paulina George is the one who used to design the famous headgear for the late Orie Rogo Manduli. She is the one who makes mine too. There is nothing big about the cap, it is just a beauty, but also unique,” Barasa said.
The two-term legislator went on to state that his red hat enjoys a special place in the country’s history, claiming it is the only one ever officially allowed in the chambers of the National Assembly.
“I am the only person permitted to wear this hat in Parliament. It has parliamentary status,” he said, adding that it makes him feel “special.”
Barasa also used the moment to issue a moral appeal to Kenyans who have taken to copying his trademark look.
“I have seen many Kenyans wearing this hat. Please, if you wear it, you must be well behaved,” he said.
“And if you have not given your life to Jesus Christ, I urge you to do so. Otherwise, don’t wear it,” he added.
The fiery MP’s attachment to the hat was evident during the Kibra by-election in November 2019, when he lost it to rowdy ODM supporters.
Barasa publicly pleaded for its return, with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed later claiming to have “found” it.
In April 2023, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo rose on a point of order challenging Barasa’s right to wear it inside the chamber.
