MP Kaluma criticised over dreadlocks remarks

Africa-Press – Kenya. Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma has received his fair share of backlash on Twitter following his dreadlocks remarks on professionals. He was commenting on the announcement made by Kenya Methodist University dean of students Esther Mbaabu who released a list of what would be considered inappropriate dressing at the varsity.

Kaluma said the measures should be implemented in all universities. “This should be enforced by all Universities and learning institutions. We’re training leaders in various fields, not prostitutes,” he said.

His follower, by the name Roddie Hungwe, tweeted asking what is wrong with dreadlocks. “Very trivial, what’s wrong with dreadlocks? Is this a Kids’ University?”

Kaluma then responded by saying “Imagine your doctor, lawyer, and engineer in dreadlocks.” The lawyers, doctors, philosophers, teachers, and engineers, all quoted his tweet with photos of them at work and while graduating.

In the memo dated January 5, 2023, Kemu said all students are required to comply with the University code of dressing. “All students are required to wear appropriate attire during the study, at meal times in the dining hall, and in all university functions,” Mbaabu said. Female students are expected to leave their tumbo cuts (tops that expose their belly and naval) at home.
