Africa-Press – Kenya. Turkana South Member of Parliament Ariko Namoit has pledged to sponsor bill in parliament to compel the government to compensate victims of bandit attacks.
Speaking during a funeral service in Lokichar as he condoled with families of victims of the latest bandit attack that saw 11 people including police officers killed, Namoit said the bill will ensure families of victims get justice.
“I am doing this so when people are attacked, families can be compensated and get justice,” he said.
In the same event, Turkana senator James Lomenen asked the government to conduct comprehensive security operations in the area to mop out illegal fire arms.
“Police are killed and fire arms are stolen, you can start by getting back the firearms before beginning any operation,” he said.
The two leaders remark’s come days after 11 people were on killed by armed gunmen in a cattle-rustling incident in Turkana East, Turkana county.
The victims included eight police officers, a chief and two villagers.
Police spokesman Bruno Shioso said the victims were pursuing a heavily armed gang that had raided a village and made away with unknown number of livestock when they were ambushed.
“The officers were in hot pursuit of Pokot bandits who had raided a village in Turkana East and made away with livestock,” he said.
Shioso said police had dispatched additional officers to reinforce the troops on the ground in beefing up security in the area and pursue the bandits.
