Africa-Press – Kenya. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has said the Member of Parliaments will go on a retreat to prepare reports on the just concluded Cabinet Secretary nominees vetting.
Wetang’ula who was speaking after the last batch of President William Ruto’s nominees had been vetted, said the MPs have until early next week to come up with the results.
” We still have much more to do, as you are aware from here you are retreating to start preparing the reports. We cannot keep the government and the country in suspense without cabinet,” he said.
“This is because the role of the cabinet under our Constitution is critical and clear, so we will retreat to prepare our reports which should be out by early next week.”
Wetang’ula said the rest of the procedures will be through the normal laid-out steps under standing orders.
“Whatever reports we make must also be voted on and accepted by the Parliament for transmission to the requesting authority which is His Excellency the president,” he said.
He applauded the MPs for professionalism in their work during the vetting process on what he said they carried the dignity of the house at every level in the manner that they conducted the proceedings.
“There was not a single revulsion I have heard of us being overbearing, leaning too hard on any member. Even where very hard questions had been asked, they were all geared towards establishing the suitability of the nominee to hold the office to which they have been nominated,” he said.
The vetting started on Monday, October 17 and ended on Saturday, October 22.
Those who were vetted on Saturday are Simon Kiprono Chelugui, Cabinet Secretary nominee for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Salim Mvurya for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.
Others were; Florence Chepngetich Koske-Bore, for Labour and Social Protection and Mercy Kiiru Wanajau, Secretary to the Cabinet.
