MSS Commander Otunge Seeks Missing Kenyan Officer

Africa-Press – Kenya. Multinational Security Support (MSS) Force Commander Godfrey Otunge has provided an update on Kenyan police officer Benedict Kabiru, who went missing during the ongoing peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

Kabiru disappeared in March 2025 when a Kenyan convoy was ambushed by armed gangs. Speaking to the press, Commander Otunge said measures have been put in place to secure the officer’s return.

“We have put all the mechanisms in place to ensure we get our officer back,” he said.

Mission reports indicate that Kenyan officers were reportedly assisting a Haitian National Police vehicle stuck in a ditch—believed to have been dug by gangs—when they came under attack.

Kabiru’s family has petitioned the court over his disappearance and is seeking government updates on his whereabouts ahead of a scheduled hearing on September 24, 2025.

Otunge also paid tribute to Officer Samuel Kitwai, the first casualty of the Kenyan-led mission.

“We did a very honourable sendoff, and he has been awarded posthumously with a medal because he is part and parcel of this mission,” Otunge said.

The commander further confirmed arrangements to repatriate the body of Corporal Kennedy Mutuku Nzuve, who died in September.

“We are preparing to bring the body back to Kenya. He remains our hero because he died in the line of duty,” he stated.

The update comes even as the family of the missing officer continues to demand answers from the government.

They have asked for clear information on his whereabouts and fate before the next scheduled court appearance on their petition.

The disappearance occurred against the backdrop of ongoing attacks on security forces by heavily armed gangs in parts of Haiti where the MSS force is deployed.
