Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya will partner with the Dominican Republic to support Kenya-led Haiti security mission.
This is according to Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi.
Kenya first sent troops to the Caribbean nation in June last and the total deployment now is around 800.
Mudavadi said the Dominican Republic has agreed to support the Kenyan-led Haiti security meeting, and the only remaining step is to formalise it.
He added that the two countries will sign an MoU to formalise the agreement to support Kenyan security officers with urgent medical evacuation.
“I will be leaving Washington today so that I can now proceed to the Dominican Republic and the sole purpose is that we are engaging with the Dominican Republic government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will support the Kenyan security personnel in Haiti in the event of any need for urgent medical evacuation,” he said.
The Prime CS further said that he will visit Brazil to enhance the bilateral partnership with Kenya.
Mudavadi is currently in the US for a visit to promote the country and enhance ties.
On Thursday, he held a meeting with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington DC.
Rubio acknowledged Kenya’s principled leadership in fostering international peace and stability.
“The meeting also reflected on recent US actions addressing criminal elements destabilising Haiti,” a statement from the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs said.
It said Kenya expressed hope that ongoing global security dialogues will further support comprehensive efforts to curb violent extremist threats globally.
The high-level bilateral meeting between Rubio and Mudavadi discussed matters of mutual strategic interest between the two nations.
The discussions centered on peace and security, deepening trade and investment ties, and strengthening diplomatic cooperation.
Both parties reaffirmed the long-standing and mutually respectful relationship between Kenya and the United States, built over decades of shared values and collaboration.
Rubio is said to have expressed his intent to visit Kenya in the near future to further cement the bilateral relationship and deepen strategic ties.
