Africa-Press – Kenya. Over 30 professional golfers will return to action at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course for a 36-hole strokeplay championship.
Among the leading pros entered for the event include home Greg Snow, Mumias long-hitter Dismas Indiza, Samuel Njoroge of Railways Club, Thika Sports Club’s Simon Ngige and CJ Wangai who is the resident professional at Sigona.
Other top pros expected include the Golf Park duo of Eric Ooko and David Wakhu, Rizwan Charania of Windsor, Edwin Miudanyi of Vet Lab and Justus Madoya of Great Rift Valley Resort among others.
Professional Golfers of Kenya captain CJ Wangai while making the announcement said the tournament will be used as a yardstick to prepare pros for the 2022 Uganda Open at Serena Golf Club on October 26-29.
Muthaiga chairman Ronald Kibaara Meru will host the event which is an annual fixture for the club.
“It’s a great opportunity for the local pros to try out their skills in the run-up to the Uganda extravaganza which is one of the top golf event in the region. At least the two-day event will help them to shake off the rust,” Wangai said, adding: “On Monday they will play 18 holes and repeat the same the following day.’
Wangai added that the entry list will be finalized on Sunday well in time for action. “We shall know by Sunday what the list looks like as that’s the deadline for submitting the names but most likely about 35 pros are assured,” Wangai added.
Apart from the Uganda Open competition, pros will also try to be in good shape ahead of season five of the Safari Tour which is traditionally used to select African individual players for the DP World Tour Magical Kenya Open 2022.
Meanwhile, the 45th edition of the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship will be hosted by Vipingo Ridge on October 20-23. The champion of the prestigious event will also earn a slot to the Kenya Open 2023 event.
Nyali Golf Club’s Adel Balala won the 2021 Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championships at the Nakuru Golf Club last year.
Playing off handicap -4, Balala scored an overall score of seven under par 285 (69, 72, 72, 72) after 72 holes, to rule the roost.
