Africa-Press – Kenya. Posta Rangers will face defending champions Nairobi United in a high-stakes Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16 clash on Sunday at the Moi Stadium, Kasarani, with a quarterfinal slot up for grabs.
The 3:30pm kickoff forms part of a double-header at Kasarani and arrives at a defining stage of the knockout competition, where margins are expected to be razor-thin. Rangers head into the fixture in impressive form, having yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
The Mailmen opened their campaign with a commanding 4-0 win over Chemogoch FC before dispatching Oinopsos FC 2-0 in the previous round, highlighting both their defensive solidity and attacking efficiency.
Nairobi United, in contrast, have endured a more demanding route despite their status as title holders. They began with an emphatic 8-0 victory over BMC Allstars but were stretched in the Round of 32, eventually edging out Tusker FC via penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The build-up has been overshadowed by injury concerns within the Nairobi United camp, with several key players facing late fitness tests. Forward Duncan Omalla, however, remains confident of their chances.
“These are the matches that define a season,” said Omalla.
“We know Posta Rangers are very organised defensively, but we believe in our attacking strength and our ability to create chances when it matters.
”He added that being defending champions brings added pressure.
“When you are the holders, every opponent raises their level. We have to stay mentally prepared and patient because not every game will be open.
”Head coach Geoffrey Oduor admitted injuries have disrupted preparations but backed his squad’s depth.
“The players available are ready to step up,” said Oduor.
“Against a disciplined side like Posta Rangers, we must be patient and clinical when chances come.
”For Posta Rangers, the tie presents an opportunity to underline their credentials as genuine contenders.
Forward Eliud Lokuwam believes their consistency has been built on the right mindset. “We have approached every game the same way,” Lokuwam said. “We respect Nairobi United, but we also believe in ourselves and what we can do.
”He emphasised the importance of concentration in knockout football.
“You cannot afford to switch off even for a moment. We have to stay compact, take our chances, and remain disciplined.
”Head coach Collins Omondi credited his side’s defensive organisation for their progress so far.
“Keeping clean sheets has given us a strong foundation,” Omondi noted.
“But we know Nairobi United have players who can change the game, so focus will be key throughout.
”He added that composure in decisive moments will likely determine the outcome.
“It will come down to small details. We must stay organised and manage the key moments well.
”The last meeting between the two sides adds further intrigue, with Posta Rangers securing a 2-0 win in December 2025.
With contrasting paths to the Round of 16 and different pressures heading into the tie, Sunday’s encounter promises a compelling contest between defensive discipline and attacking ambition, as both sides chase a place in the last eight.
