Ndigiti Eyes Early Statement in Kapsabet for 2026

Africa-Press – Kenya. The 2017 World Under-18 10,000m race walk bronze medallist Dominic Ndigiti believes laying down an early marker at the third Athletics Kenya weekend meeting in Kapsabet will be crucial in shaping a dominant 2026 campaign.

The three-day AK weekend meet kicks off today and runs through Saturday, serving as the final open weekend fixture on the 2026 AK calendar before the inaugural Premium Meets swing in action.

Ndigiti is set to line up in the men’s 20km race walk at the Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex. For the 26-year-old, the Kapsabet assignment is about a strong start, staying sharp and sending a message.

He believes a commanding performance in the opening race walk event of the year will set the tone for a powerful and consistent 2026 season. “I am going to push myself to get good results in Kapsabet,” Ndigiti told the Star.

“This is the last open meeting of the season, so I have to push myself, get good results and clock a good time to ensure I earn invitations to the Premium Meets,” he added.

The former global youth medallist revealed his preparations have been intense, razor-sharp and meticulously structured with an eye on peaking at the right moments this season. “My training has been good, focused and competitive. I am just hoping for the best this year,” he stated.

Beyond Kapsabet, Ndigiti has his sights firmly fixed on the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships slated for April 12 in Brazil, where he hopes to secure a coveted Team Kenya slot.

“In April, we have the World Race Walking Team Championships, and I am targeting a place in Team Kenya,” he noted.

He is also confident they can improve on their last outing at the global showpiece in Muscat, Oman, in 2022, where the country managed a solitary bronze through Samuel Gathimba to finish ninth on the medal standings. “As Team Kenya, we are targeting better results than our previous appearance in Oman,” he said.

Apart from the Brazil showdown, Ndigiti is focused on the African Athletics Championships set for May 12–17 in Ghana, and the Commonwealth Games from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“My targets are to represent Kenya at the African Championships in Ghana and the Commonwealth Games in Scotland,” he affirmed.

In Kapsabet, however, the task will be anything but straightforward. Ndigiti will square off against three-time African Championships 20km race walk champion Samuel Gathimba, setting up a mouth-watering duel.
