Africa-Press – Kenya. Njoro Girls High School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely Njoro Girls High School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely following protests by parents and residents over the death of a student, under what has been described as unclear circumstances.

Brenda Akinyi, a Form Four student, died at a Nakuru Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at school. Her family has expressed concerns about how her illness was managed, stating that she was unwell for extended periods and that medical attention was not sought promptly.

“She was complaining of a persistent headache, but the nurse kept giving her buprofen,” her mother claimed.

“They failed to contact me to go and take my child to the hospital.” The family said they were only informed after Brenda’s condition worsened, prompting distress among relatives and the wider community.

The incident sparked protests beginning Monday, with parents and residents gathering outside the school to demand a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police officers were deployed to the institution to manage the demonstrators as tensions rose outside the gates. As the demonstrations continued on Tuesday, education officials took measures to restore calm by suspending learning activities for some classes.

Nakuru Education Director Mulili told the media that all Form Three and Form Four students had been sent home as a precautionary measure. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and a postmortem is scheduled for Tuesday.

“My daughter looked weak and dizzy. Her lips were chapped too. I don’t have much to say because this has already happened, but what I would like to tell the school is that let this not happen to another child,” the mother said. By the time of going to press, Njoro Girls High School had not issued a statement on the incident.
