No cause for alarm over flu in Homa Bay – health official

Africa-Press – Kenya. Homa Bay Health chief officer Kevin Osuri has urged Homa Bay residents to remain alert after a flu-like virus was reported in the county. Osuri urged them to maintain personal hygiene and avoid crowded places to keep the disease at bay, saying the county had been capacitated to address the challenge.

“Flu is a seasonal disease and there is no cause for alarm, we are also alert to curb the spread,” he said.

“Those who are infected should seek urgent medical care,” he said. This comes after some students and residents got infected. The students were from Ringa Boys in Kabondo Kaipul.

The school principal Augustine Muma said the school was badly hit as several students were infected about a fortnight ago. Muma said more than 30 students and some teachers were infected.

“The situation forced us to send some students home. This was one of the ways of curbing the spread,” Muma said. Speaking to journalists over the matter, the head teacher said the two students presented flu and headache symptoms and other complications.

“Some students had to get picked by their parents because their flu was accompanied by other complications,” he said.

“We took some students to the hospital for treatment. Some health officials came to our school and treated other students.” Muma said they later managed to contain the disease. He said the school is going on with its activities as usual.
