NTSA Begins Impromptu Countrywide Crackdown

Africa-PressKenya. National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has kicked off an impromptu crackdown countrywide targeting motorists.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, May 4, the authority noted that the crackdown dubbed Road Safety Compliance has been mounted countrywide.

The exercise is aimed at verifying the authenticity of Public Service Vehicle’s licences as well as badges, driving licenses and Inspection licenses.

“Currently happening is a nation wide NTSA Road Safety Compliance exercise targeting all motorists. Ensure your licences including PSV, Badges, DL and Inspection are valid. Engage our Teams along the way!” State NTSA.

The exercise was being carried by the authority in conjunction with the National Police Service (NPS).

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from NTSA confirmed that the operation was on although it had been delayed in the morning due to the visit by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu.

The crackdown comes barely two weeks after the authority impounded high-end cars with registration plates not issued by NTSA along Langata Road, Nairobi.

In mid-April, the source told Kenyans.co.ke that the earlier crackdown had been paused for a while as they review their findings in the initial week’s test run.

“We have taken a break for another week as we review the progress so far. This thing has come up and it is part of what we are following,” he explained.

Among cars that were impounded in the exercise included Volkswagen Touareg, Mercedes Benz and Toyota Land Cruiser among others.

NTSA had warned drivers against using customised plates that are not of the prescribed design according to section 12 (1) of the Traffic Act.

The authority recorded increased instances of road malpractices during the period in which President Uhuru Kenyatta had placed four counties under partial lockdown.
