Africa-Press – Kenya. Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has expressed his gratitude to the residents of Kisumu county for maintaining peace during Wednesday’s commemoration of the first anniversary of the Gen Z-led protests against the 2024 Finance Bill and the rising cost of living.

In a statement released by the Governor’s office, Nyong’o praised residents for conducting themselves with restraint.

He noted that the streets of Kisumu City and other sub-counties remained relatively calm throughout the day.

“I wish to thank the residents of Kisumu county for maintaining peace today during the activities commemorating the first anniversary of the Gen Z protests,” he stated.

The governor added, “The people of Kisumu will always be vigilant to protect and promote human rights in our republic.”

He also emphasised the county’s commitment to constructive civic engagement.

“We will also express constructive dissent to any form of political oppression and abuse of human rights.”

The Gen Z protests, which erupted in mid-2024, were spearheaded by young Kenyans using social media to mobilise nationwide demonstrations against new tax measures and poor governance.

Kisumu, often considered an epicentre of political activism, was among the regions that experienced heightened tensions during the initial wave of protests.

This year, however, the lakeside city remained calm, with residents going about their normal business even as demonstrations to mark the day were witnessed in other counties.

A few human rights activists who were addressing the media were dispersed by youths on motorcycles, who later left. No major incident was reported in the town.
