Africa-Press – Kenya. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has stirred political waters with a declaration that the ODM will pull out of the broad-based government by March next year.
He insisted that the party’s patience with President William Ruto’s administration has run out.
Addressing supporters during an event on Friday, Amisi invoked the party’s political history, noting that the late ODM leader Raila Odinga only once joined a sitting government, and even then, he did so close to a general election.
“Raila is the one first time to join government, but he joined the government one year to the election. William Ruto’s government cannot be different,” he said.
Amisi said ODM members entered the broad-based government in good faith, guided by the assurance of their party leader.
But he insisted that Raila had made it clear that the partnership had a definite end date.
“Sisi watu ambao tuliongea na Raila alituambia tarehe tisa mwezi wa tatu 2026 ndiyo siku ya mwisho kuungana na William Ruto,” he said.
“Na sisi watu wa ODM tunaambia watu wetu, prepare for a state of emergency in the party.”
According to Amisi, the political ceasefire that brought ODM into the power-sharing arrangement was never meant to be permanent.
He argued that remaining in the fold until 2027 would be a betrayal of the party’s supporters, who he said are already burdened by economic hardship.
“That (March 9, 2026) was the last time we were supposed to be with Ruto,” he declared.
“You cannot tell us to wait until 2027. 2027 how, and shamba inaendelea kuharibika? Ati 2027 na watoto wako nyumbani? Ati tusiongee?”
Amisi accused the Ruto administration of failing to address the rising cost of living and alleged that ODM’s influence within the broad-based government had not translated to meaningful change for ordinary citizens.
He said the party would not allow itself to be held hostage by a long political timeline that ignores current economic realities. “We are not going to be in broad-based until 2027,” he said.
The Saboti lawmaker further hinted at internal mobilisation within ODM ahead of the planned withdrawal, saying structures were already being prepared to “restore the party’s full independence” and ready it for a possible confrontational stance against the government.
His remarks come amid growing discomfort within sections of ODM over what they perceive as diminishing returns in the broad-based government.
During ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, Raila’s youngest child, Winnie Odinga, stunned delegates when she suggested that her family may not be comfortable with ODM’s unconditional support for Ruto’s re-election and alleged a bid to “sell the party”.
Although ODM leadership has not formally announced any pullout plans, Amisi’s close alignment with Winnie’s fiery remarks suggests the debate is active inside the party.
