Africa-Press – Kenya. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has called for a swift and thorough investigation into the killing of prominent Nairobi lawyer Michael Kyalo Mbobu.
Mbobu was shot dead on Tuesday evening along Magadi Road in Nairobi, in what detectives believe was a targeted attack.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ODPP mourned the tragic loss and extended its condolences to the lawyer’s family, colleagues, friends, and the wider legal fraternity.
“His distinguished career spanned academia, public service, and private practice. His exemplary leadership greatly shaped the teaching and practice of the Law of Evidence in Kenya,” the ODPP said.
The office welcomed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ (DCI) commitment to securing justice but insisted that the matter must be prioritised.
The DPP directed the Inspector General of Police to fast-track the probe and submit a comprehensive report within seven days.
“The ODPP echoes the DCI’s appeal for members of the public with any information relevant to this case to come forward and share it with law enforcement agencies without delay,” the statement read.
The ODPP further reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the security and dignity of every Kenyan.
Chilling Details of the Attack
According to police reports, Mbobu was ambushed at around 5.40 pm while driving home. He was trailed by two men on motorcycles who opened fire on his car before fleeing the scene.
He was shot eight times and died at the scene. An autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor confirmed that Mbobu succumbed to severe injuries and massive bleeding.
“His spine was severely injured, and most of the bullets had entry and exit points apart from the two we recovered lodged in his chest below the arm,” Dr Oduor said.
“Some bullets were directed at his neck. We can say he died from severe bleeding.”
Investigations Underway
Detectives are now piecing together Mbobu’s final movements, focusing on the individuals he met earlier on Tuesday as part of their inquiries.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin appealed to the public for information that could aid the investigation.
He urged anyone with details to report to the nearest police station, call the toll-free number #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203, or send information confidentially via WhatsApp to 0709 570 00.
