Africa-Press – Kenya. Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru believes there is still room for improvement from his charges despite a winning start to the Kenya Cup season.
The Nakuru-based outfit share joint top spot with Kabras Sugar RFC on 20 points after four wins with the coach noting that there are some facets of play that need to improve on as the season goes along.
“It’s a great start to the season but there are areas of play, especially in defence, that need some work going forward. Our one-on-one tackling also needs to be sharper to prevent teams from gaining momentum,” noted Weru.
The former Kenya Sevens scrumhalf expects a more intense period when the league resumes in January as teams chase for playoff places.
“Competition amongst all the clubs will be tougher in the New Year as we chase playoffs, where only the top four teams qualify, unlike in previous years when we had six. We, therefore, can’t afford to be complacent,” he added.
Weru believes their form will play an important role in their quest and insists the spirit and mood in the camp is high.
“The wins have definitely come with some positive impacts. We are very happy to end the year on a high. This is important for us and our quest in the league. All this has been achieved because of the work we’ve been putting in week-in, week-out, coupled with the work we put in during pre-season,” he said.
Weru’s charges have so far beaten Mwamba (25-19), Impala (28-10), Nondies (29-05) and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology(MMUST) (30-19) with all wins coming with a bonus point.
Meanwhile, Nakuru RFC and Kenya Lionesses head coach Felix Oloo has attained a World Rugby Level Two coaching certification.
The 2016 SOYA Community Coach of The Year Award winner joins KCB Rugby assistant coach Dennis Mwanja on the list of the latest coaches to attain the certification.
Oloo, a Kenya Cup winner with Nakuru RFC has played a major role in developing rugby from the grassroots in Nakuru.
Monate Akuei, Peter Wanjala, Lawrence Ishuga, Ignatius Gichure, Grace Adhiambo, Vivian Akumu, Angeline Awino, Fresha Awino, Laureen Akoth, Veronica Wanjiku and Sophy Ayieta are some of the players who have been part of his development program.
