Africa-Press – Kenya. Strathmore Scorpions’ experienced attacker Gilly Okumu wants the students to build upon their 1-0 win over Lakers in Kisumu on Sunday.

New signing Grace Bwire, who was acquired from Blazers scored the all-important goal in the last quarter as the multiple Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) champions made it five wins to maintain their perfect start to the season.

The outcome enabled the Meshack Senge-coached side to maintain their lead at the top of the seven-team league with 15 points, but Okumu wasn’t impressed by the final score.

“It’s a pity we didn’t utilize the countless chances we created. We couldn’t make our dominance count and the job would have been done by halftime had we been clinical,” Okumu said.

In a bid to win their first league title, Okumu who previously played in Germany said they will take one game at a time to fulfil their ambitions.

“So far, so good. Taking it on a match-by-match basis is the best strategy. We don’t want to burden ourselves with pressure and expectations. It’s good we picked up from where we left off before the long break,” Okumu said.

Scorpions are yet to concede a goal this season. Such defensive solidity was never witnessed before and has been cited occasionally as the reason the students haven’t mounted a serious title challenge in the past.

Elsewhere, a Terry Masibo goal was the difference as the defending champions Blazers edged out Sailors 1-0 at the City Park Stadium.

The veteran defender converted from the penalty spot in the fifth minute to give the record African Club champions their second win of the weekend.

Blazers thumped Wolverines 3-0 on Saturday, with Tracy Karanja, Eleanor Chebet and Joan Anjao on the scoresheet. Their pair of victories propelled Blazers to second on the log with 13 points although they have played a game more than Scorpions.

Sailors remained winless after six matches, drawing three and losing as many to remain rooted at the foot of the table with the prospect of relegation not ruled out should inconsistency and poor form persists.
