Africa-Press – Kenya. The fifth edition of the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Handball Jamboree, set for this weekend, has attracted 41 teams. Coordinator Shisoka Akaka said there are 24 men’s teams and 15 for women.
The registration fee per team is Sh3,000. Among the entrants in the men’s division are defending champions General Service Unit (GSU) Nairobi. “GSU Nairobi has declared its intention to defend the title.
The defending champions in the women’s category, Kisiwa Technical Institute, are yet to confirm their participation,” said Akaka, the MMUST assistant games tutor.
He said MMUST will use the tournament to gauge their teams ahead of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Western Conference championships set for November 23 at the institution.
MMUST men’s handball team will return after a two-year ban. “This tournament is important for us. Our men’s handball is returning from a ban and we want to test ourselves against the best teams in the country,” he said.
He tipped the MMUST women’s handball team, the defending KUSF Western Conference champions, to clinch top honours. At the same time, Akaka said the inaugural Western Region Lacrosse Jamboree has attracted 12 teams.
The tournament will be held tomorrow and Sunday. Participating teams pay Sh3,500. He said the men’s category will feature six teams and the women’s category the same number of teams.
The teams that will battle it out in both the women’s and men’s categories are hosts MMUST, Daystar University, Kaimosi Friends University, Kibabii University, Kenyatta University, and Sigalagala National Polytechnic.
Akaka said the top three teams in each category, both in handball and lacrosse, will receive awards ranging from trophies, medals, and balls. The competitions are sponsored by well-wishers and MMUST handball alumni. Hosts MMUST are also sponsors, having provided the fields, preparation costs, ambulance, eight trophies, and security.
