Africa-Press – Kenya. Alicia Owegi and Brandon Sagala will spearhead Team Kenya at the ITF Under-18 tournament slated for next week at the Nairobi Club.

Owegi will have Cynthia Cheruto, Faith Urasa, Reha Kipsang, Mercyline Oresha Linda Serena and Stacy Yego in the girls’ category.

In the boys’ category, Raymond Oduor, Sahib Chana, Liberty Kibue and Alvin Kimathi will lead the charge for top honours.

Owegi said they have had trained at the Nairobi Club and have had rigorous training sessions for the past fortnight and will be aiming to better their performances from last year which was mixed.

“This being the first tournament of the year we want to do well there are aspects of play our coaches have worked on and we are relishing the challenge from our competitors,” added Owegi

Owegi said the team has been inspired by the rise of Africa champion Angela Okutoyi, who is scheduled to play in the Junior Australian grand slam this Saturday.

“She has been an inspiration to us and she has given us words of encouragement and someday in the near future, we can play at the level she is playing in,” noted Owegi.

Players expected for the event are from the United States, Canada, Italy, England Germany, Spain, France, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and South Africa making up the African continent.

According to TK administrator, Nancy Nduku preparation for the event are almost complete and it will run for three weeks.

“It’s a three-week leg tournament with all Covid-19 protocols being followed,” she said.

Nduku said the draw for the tournament will be released by the weekend.
