Police Take Action After Viral Video of Man Slapping Woman in Ruto Rally

Africa-Press – Kenya. The National Police Service has finally taken action after a video went viral on social media showing a man slapping a woman during a political rally reportedly held by Deputy President William Ruto in Kisii County.

The second in command accompanied by other Kenya Kwanza leaders including Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula held several rallies in the Kisii region on Thursday, February 10.

According to the video which has been circulated widely on different social media platforms, the man was recorded assaulting a woman who seemed to hold a different political opinion.

Following public uproar, police have apprehended one person linked to the incident and has been detained. The police are set to grill the individual before instituting proper legal action.

“Attention of the National Police Service is drawn to a disturbing and widely circulated video clip where a man is clearly seen assaulting a female during a political rally in Kisii. Police in Kisii have acted on the incident and made an arrest of one male person,” police stated.

“He is in police custody assisting with the investigation and will face court action once the investigation is completed.”

The law enforcement officers have since warned the public against engaging in activities that do not foster peace and unity.

“NPS Wishes to advise the public to exercise restraint and accommodate divergence of opinion during the electioneering period to mitigate on instances of lawlessness and breach of the peace.”

This directive follows orders issued to police commanders by the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Saturday, February 5.

Matiang’i tasked police commanders with attending regular peace and security meetings within their jurisdictions.

“Police Commanders at all levels should identify key stakeholders in their respective areas of command and attend stakeholders’ meetings to deliberate on election security matters,” the manual released by Matiang’i read in part.

“Police Commanders at all levels shall ensure that all election security personnel have a thorough knowledge of their election security duties through briefing and full details of such briefing shall be recorded in the Occurrence Book.”
