President Ruto urges fans to keep calm as Kenya face Zambia

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga cheer on Harambee Stars/ HANDOUT President William Ruto has called on football fans to exercise restraint during Sunday’s Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 Group ‘A’ final clash against Zambia at the Moi Stadium, Kasarani, warning that unruly behaviour could tarnish the nation’s image.

His appeal comes amid a string of hefty fines from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over security breaches during Kenya’s CHAN fixtures.

Just last weekend, after the Harambee Stars’ historic 1-0 victory over North African giants Morocco, CAF slapped Kenya with a Sh6.5 million citing serious security breaches.

Further, the continental body warned that Kenya risks having its home matches played at alternative venues outside the country.

In the wake of the Morocco fixture, the stadium’s capacity for the Zambia game has been slashed from 48,000 to 27,000.

“This Sunday we have a game against Zambia in Kasarani. I beg you, let us not ruin the game, let’s ensure we follow all the rules and regulations given by CAF,” Ruto said.

The head of state noted that six fan zones have been set for those who will not be able to access the stadium.

“I have asked Nairobi County leadership as well as the Sports Ministry to come up with fan zones in various regions in the city, which will have screens so that those who cannot get to Kasarani will enjoy the game,” he added.

The fan zones will be located at Uhuru Park (CBD), Lucky Summer – Ngomongo area behind Kasarani stadium, Dandora Stadium, Utalii (Stima Club), Jacaranda Grounds and Kibera DC grounds.

While lauding supporters for their passionate backing of Harambee Stars, he cautioned against behaviour that could invite further sanctions.

“To all the fans, you have done a tremendous job supporting and cheering Harambee Stars. However, we have to do it within the parameters of what is allowed by CAF. Therefore, I am asking everybody to be restrained,” he said.

“Those who will make it to Kasarani must also be orderly so that we do not spoil the chances for Harambee Stars and our country.”

The President underscored the significance of CHAN as a curtain-raiser for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

“For the very first time, Kenya is hosting CHAN, a historic event. We will also host Afcon in 2027 because we have upped our game as a nation and we want to ensure Kenya is recognised as a continental sports icon,” he said.
