Africa-Press – Kenya. Bungoma-based Rangers coach Reagan Makona has promised to bring down National Cereals and Produce Board in the Kenya Handball Federation Super Cup. On Wednesday, the tactician said they have started preparations for the May 13 tournament set for Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi.
“They escaped in the league, winning by a small margin and it was really demoralising to my girls. We will turn the tables this time round,” said Makona.
Rangers went down 37-34 to the millers despite leading at halftime. They also lost 33-22 to eventual league winners Nairobi Water Queens the following day.
“Had we beaten NCPB, we would have been in very high spirits and even that result against Water Queens would have been close,” he said.
“We will give them a good fight and should we lose again, it will be by a small margin. This is my promise.” Ranger had a good second leg in the league as they ruined runners-up Ulinzi Sharks chances by stunning the soldiers 36-32.
However, Makona said they have had a setback in their preparations following the unavailability of eight players who have commitments Eldoret and Dar es Salaam.
“Some of the players are currently playing at the national secondary school games (in Eldoret) and the U-20 International Handball Federation (IHF) championships in Tanzania,” he said.
The six players who are in Dar will not return to Bungoma after the tournament but will train in Nairobi under coach Musa Musuiya. “Since the Super Cup is only few weeks away, we thought they was no need for them to return home but wait for the rest of the team there,” said Makona.
Rangers, composed of college and high school players, have not acquired any new players and will field those already on their books. Rangers finished fourth in the league behind Water Queens, Sharks and NCPB, the teams they will face at the Super Cup. After the Super Cup, the KHF announced that the teams will have a brief break before embarking on the 2023 calendar.
