Officers in the Kenya Prisons Service have been handed a major boost after President William Ruto announced a salary increase for them beginning July 1, this year.
Speaking during the Passing Out Parade at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru on Thursday, February 26, Ruto said the salary adjustments were in line with the recommendations made by the Maraga Taskforce.
“I therefore take particular pride in the implementation of salary increase for all officers of Kenya Prison Service with the recommendation of the Maraga Taskforce report,” Ruto said.
Ruto revealed that the government had already implemented the first and second phases of the salary review, and as a result, the entry-level pay for a prison constable has risen by 36 per cent.
At the same time, the Head of State noted that the overall salary scale had grown by 24 per cent and further announced that Phase Three of the salary review will take effect from July 1, 2026.
“Following the implementation of the first and second phases of the salary review, the entry pay for a prison constable has risen by 36 per cent, while the amount of the salary scale has grown by 24 per cent,” he added.
According to Ruto, the salary increment reflects the government’s resolve to safeguard the welfare of correctional officers and boost their morale in recognition of the critical role they play in the justice system.
He further noted that the move is expected to boost morale within the prison service, as officers have in the past raised concerns over remuneration and working conditions.
“This is clear evidence of the government’s sustained resolve to ensure that the welfare and motivation of our correctional services are upheld,” the President affirmed.
During the event, also attended by other senior government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Ruto commended the officers’ role in maintaining peace and security.
He described prison officers as a key pillar of Kenya’s national security, noting that their vigilance and professionalism help prevent threats and contribute directly to a peaceful and stable country.
“It is on this enabler of peace and security where you, as prison officers, play a critical and indispensable role by ensuring the safe, humane and secure custody of offenders, maintaining order within correctional facilities,” Ruto said.
