Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto departs to Qatar for the UN Second World Summit for Social Development.

President William Ruto will on Monday evening depart for Doha, Qatar, to strengthen economic partnerships, attract investment, and attend the UN Second World Summit for Social Development.

The summit will focus on poverty reduction, decent work and social inclusion.

According to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the President will hold talks with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, and strategic development initiatives.

The discussions are expected to support Kenya’s goal of expanding economic opportunities and modernising key sectors of the economy.

In a statement, the State House Spokesperson said the President will also conclude key investment agreements aimed at modernising infrastructure and advancing flagship transport and energy projects.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts to position Kenya as a regional hub for innovation, logistics, and sustainable development.

During the visit, the President will also advance expanded Qatari investment and strategic partnerships in agriculture. The focus will be on food security and climate-smart farming.

The State House spokesperson added that these areas are central to improving productivity and strengthening resilience in the face of changing climate conditions.

The President is also expected to pursue investment and cooperation in renewable energy, green hydrogen, health, tourism, transport and logistics. He will additionally engage Qatari business leaders to broaden opportunities for public-private partnerships.

Another key agenda item is the expansion of the Kenya-Qatar Bilateral Labour Agreement. Hussein says the President will pursue the inclusion of more professional and technical roles for Kenyans seeking work in Qatar.

The move aims to “create new pathways for young Kenyans and support those already working in Qatar as they continue contributing to both economies.”

At the UN Second World Summit for Social Development, President Ruto will deliver statements on behalf of Kenya and the Africa Group. He will call for fair global financial systems, universal access to essential services, strengthened multilateral cooperation, and reforms that enhance African representation in global organisations.

According to Hussein, the visit reflects Kenya’s continued commitment to building strong international partnerships that advance shared prosperity.

The three-day summit, scheduled to take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre, brings together heads of state and government, ministers, and civil society champions.

Also attending are global development experts, youth leaders, and private-sector representatives, all gathering to deliberate on urgent social-economic priorities confronting the world.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed, in a briefing last week, that UN Secretary General António Guterres will deliver the keynote address at Tuesday’s opening ceremony.

Guterres is expected to reflect on progress since the first Social Summit in Copenhagen in 1995 and spotlight urgent global challenges, including widening income gaps, poverty, youth unemployment, geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crises affecting millions.

Organisers say more than 14,000 participants will attend, taking part in plenary sessions, high-level roundtables and thematic forums focused on social protection systems, decent work opportunities, labour rights, digital inclusion, youth empowerment, and policies to protect vulnerable and marginalised groups.
