Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has revealed that his ambitious Open University of Kenya will get a charter before the end of this month. Speaking during the Madaraka Day national celebrations at Moi Stadium inn Embu, Ruto said preparations for the launch are being finalised.
“Finally, the National Open University will obtain its charter in the course of this month and as we speak, courses are being uploaded for commissioning,” he said.
He said Kenyans will now be able toe access affordable university education from the comfort of their homes. The university will operate like other institutions but will only have virtual classes, no physical learning. The President said that education matters for freedom and self-reliance, and is the enabler and optimiser of every other undertaking.
“We have taken all possible measures, and pursued every available option, to actualise our vision to make education at all levels accessible, affordable and inclusive, and removed social and economic barriers to the attainment of the highest level of education by Kenyans,” he said.
In February the Ministry of Education revealed a number of courses to be offered by the proposed Open University of Kenya. The institution will be built at approximately Sh250 million and will be domiciled at JKUAT.
According to a notice in the local dailies, the ministry wishes to work with experts to develop programmes for the first phase. The courses listed include Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Bachelor in Technology Education and Bachelor of Data Science, among others.
