Africa-Press – Kenya. Sailors team manager Collins Asimba insists they will have to be better in their upcoming assignments if they are to avoid relegation.
Sailors drew 1-1 with Wolverines in a Kenya Hockey Union Premier League match at the City Park Stadium on Sunday, which extended their winless run to seven matches.
Yvonne Madowo’s 42nd-minute strike for newbies Wolverines was canceled out by Leah Omwandho’s thunderous effort in the 44th minute.
“Conversion has been our Achilles heel. We create a lot but we don’t take our chances,” said Asambi.
“You can’t win a match with a toothless attack. The squad is depleted also. We only had three players on the bench and one was a rookie.”
“We know we can do better and relegation has never crossed our minds. We will rise again and the sooner we can do that the better.”
Wolverines coach Dennis Owoka said it was two points dropped but a draw was a fair result. He, however, added that they will have to inject fresh blood into the team with many of their players on the wrong end of their careers.
“We need to start getting points because it doesn’t look good for us in mid-table. The priority is to recruit and we will be stronger next season. Some players came this morning (Sunday) from Eldoret and Meru so training as a team is another problem,” said Asambi, a former title-winning coach with Butali Warriors
“The few times that we meet we try to work out on tactics and formation. We have a very solid defence but in as much as the midfield looks good, there’s some disconnect that must be rectified.”
“We also understand age is not on our side. Some players have been in the top-flight for so long. We are looking to replace them but you can’t replace someone who is better than the one coming in,” he added.
Sailors could not make their first-half dominance count.
Dominic Kremer, who was deployed as Sailors’ defacto number 10, cut a dejected figure after creating countless chances for teammates only for them to be spanned with Linet Lusinde and versatile midfielder Sheila Chebet wasting glorious chances.
Meanwhile, record champions Blazers rescued a point after Maureen Okumu scored an equaliser in the 55th minute to cancel out Aurelia Opndo’s 19th-minute goal.
