Africa-Press – Kenya. Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has successfully conducted the first bronchoscopy procedure in Nairobi County.

Bronchoscopy is a vital medical procedure that enables doctors to inspect the interior of the lungs and bronchi using a bronchoscope.

A bronchoscope is a slender, flexible tube with a light and camera on its tip.

“The success of the first exercise marks a significant milestone in the county’s healthcare services. I laud the medical team for this achievement,” Sakaja said.

He spoke at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital after the first successful procedure was conducted.

He emphasized that enhancing healthcare services is a top priority for his administration adding that he aims at upgrading all health facilities in Nairobi to provide better service.

The bronchoscope will now be available at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

During the procedure, the bronchoscope is inserted through the patient’s nose or mouth, down the throat, and into the lungs.

Bronchoscopy serves multiple purposes, including diagnosing lung diseases, infections, tumours, or inflammation and collecting mucus or tissue samples (biopsy) for laboratory testing.

It will also be key in removing blockages or foreign objects from the airways and treating specific lung conditions, such as bleeding or narrowed airways.

The procedure is generally performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient’s condition and the procedure’s complexity.

“This advancement underscores the county’s commitment to improving healthcare access and quality for its residents,” Sakaja added.
