Africa-PressKenya. Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on June 18, 2021 announced the temporary closure of the main carriageway along Thika Road at Gacharage Bridge.

A statement by KeNHA indicated that the carriageway will be closed on Sunday, June 21, between 10pm to 4am.

The aim of the closure is to install a gantry sign ( a traffic sign assembly in which signs are mounted.)

The signs often contain the apparatus for traffic monitoring systems and cameras, or open road tolling systems.

“KeNHA urges all motorists to exercise caution and patience while driving through road section on the said day of closure and to follow directions as given by traffic marshals.”

The authority informed that traffic would be directed to one side of the carriageway during the period of closure.

The timing of the maintenance activity has been planned to result in the least of inconvenience to road users.

Rehabilitation of Thika Superhighway commenced a few years after the road was constructed under the third President Mwai Kibaki in 2010.

KeNHA and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) both maintain sections of the road.

Some of the construction works done on the road include; replacement of road signs, expansion of the road, re-carpeting of worn-out sections of the road and the erection of footbridges.

In April, KeNHA also temporarily closed a service lane along Thika road.

The service lane located at Ruiru Toll Station next to St Teresa of Avila Catholic was closed for for road works and repairs.
