Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has asked the new Director General of the Kenya Coast Guard to serve the country with zeal.
Speaking on Friday after Shioso’s swearing-in at State House Nairobi, Ruto said the new DG is assuming office at a time when maritime security is gaining currency in the world.
“We must strengthen the country’s ability to protect our territorial waters,” the President said.
The Kenya Coast Guard is charged with the enforcement of the law on security, safety and protection of maritime resources within Kenya’s territorial waters.
“Serve with diligence and observe the Constitution,” the President told Shioso.
Ruto appointed the former Police Spokesperson to the position on April 12, 2023, for a period of four years.
Prior to the appointment, Shioso was serving as the Commandant of the National Police College Main Campus Kiganjo.
He was elevated to the post in November 2022, taking over from Japhet Koome following his appointment as Inspector General of Police.
Former Director of Operations at the police headquarters, Munga Nyale, replaced Shioso at the Police College.
Shioso also previously served as a personal assistant to the former Director of Criminal Investigations, Ndegwa Muhoro and deputy director, of the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit (BFIU).
He previously also worked as a Transnational Organized Crime Expert at the UN headquarters in New York.
His new roles at the Coast Guard include preventing unlawful fishing, patrolling Kenya’s territorial waters, preventing environmental damage and general maritime security including preventing piracy, human and drug trafficking and smuggling.
