Africa-Press – Kenya. The National Super League game between Shabana and Mombasa Elite was rained off at Gusii Stadium in Kisiion Thursday. The teams were deadlocked 1-1 at the time the match was rained off. The remaining 45 minutes will be played on Friday from 12 pm.
Isaac Otieno gave Shabana the lead in the second minute after a goalmouth scramble while captain Shariff Amugombo pulled the teams’ level after Shabana players failed to clear a loose ball in the area.
Both teams welcomed the decision to call off the game. Mombasa Elites coach and former Shabana player Charles Okwemba said: “The decision to call off the game is in order because the field is unplayable. We are sorry we arrived late because our bus developed mechanical problems at Kaplong which delayed us.”
Shabana secretary general, Elizaphan Kerama, said going forward, all their home games will start at 2 pm. “Even today, we wanted the game to kick off at 2 pm but Mombasa Elites arrived at 3.45 pm. We agree with the decision to postpone the game because the playing field is still waterlogged and it’s drizzling,” said Kerama.
Shabana was seeking to bounce back and open a seven-point lead at the top of the NSL log after dropping points in their last two games. Goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor started his first game for the Glamour Boys in place of the injured Eric Ongiri.
Both teams will be in action on Monday with Shabana traveling to Kakamega for a game against Vihiga United while Mombasa Elite will be at home against Gusii FC.
