Africa-Press – Kenya. Newly crowned Cape Town 12km road race champion Daniel Simiu will highlight the Valencia 10km road race next month in Spain.
Simiu will be using the race as part of the build-up ahead of World Indoor Championships.
Simiu said the January 9th race will kick-start the 2022 journey that will see him feature in a number of races including the World Championships in Oregon and Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
“Making my debut in the race will be great as I prepare for the rest of the season,” said Simiu, who is also the inaugural Nakuru City Half marathon champion.
Fresh from finishing second at the Athletics Kenya Sotik Cross Country Championships, the Iten-based runner earned a slot to compete at the race following the cancellation of Corrida de Houilles 10km, the race he won in 2019 with a course record of 27:12.
“I was set to defend my Corrida de Houilles race title but it was canceled due to the Covid-19 in France,” he added.
“Even if I don’t win or get my personal best, I want to run my best. My target is to be ready for the World Indoor Games, starting in Manchester, where I will compete in the 3,000m,” he said.
He said he is also looking forward to competing in the World Cross Country Tour in Eldoret on February 12 as long as he is invited.
“For now, my focus is different but if called upon by Athletics Kenya to run for the country, I will be happy to do so,” he added.
