Africa-Press – Kenya. Six suspects were on Wednesday arrested by police in Bridgestone and Columbia areas along Mathare River in Nairobi.
Starehe Sub-County Police Commander William Sirengo and the OCS Mathare Police Station conducted a raid in these areas and suspects were apprehended as others managed to escape the arrest.
“Drugs, which included; one kg of heroine, five kilograms of cannabis sativa and illicit brew were recovered,” Sirengo said.
In his report, he noted that the suspects possessed several needles, alcohol pads, a dagger and NSP Kits.
The areas were termed as hubs of drug peddling, drug abuse and illegal gambling by the OCS.
The raid was aimed at getting rid of the dens which had become a nuisance in the neighbourhoods.
During the operation, a gambling machine was also recovered.
National Police Service commended Sirengo and his team as they strive to do away with criminal activities in Starehe Sub-County.
The six suspects are currently in custody and are expected to appear in court on Thursday.
Cases of illegal drug consumption and gambling have been on the rise in the past years amid persistent operations by officials to tame the same.
In May, sleuths drawn from the Anti-narcotics Unit based at DCI headquarters nabbed the suspects at an apartment within Nyayo Estate in Embakasi, Nairobi.
“Engaging in such vices in our neighbourhoods erodes the society and National Police Service discourages the public, especially the youth from engaging in criminal activities,” Sirengo said.
The authority gave out a stun warning discouraging engagement in gambling and illegal drug use and possession among the youths.
