Africa-Press – Kenya. The stage is set for the inaugural Robert Ouko Sports Day on Sunday in Nyamira County.

The event is organized by Gusii Sports Legends Welfare Society in honour of 1972 Olympic gold medalist Robert Ouko who died on August 18, 2019, after a long illness.

According to secretary Edwin Maranga, the event will be held at Manga Sengera Mixed Secondary School and not Manga Stadium as earlier announced because the facility is not ready.

Maranga said the race has attracted over 500 athletes. The main event will be a 10km cross-country race for senior men and women while juniors will cover 5 km.

There will also be kids athletics with children aged under-12 years featuring in a 2km race and the elderly taking part in a 1kms race. Maranga appealed to well-wishers to support the race.

“We are seeking more partners to support us make the event a success,” he said. Top athletes who dominated the five-part Nyamira Great Run Series which concluded last week are expected to battle it out as they prepare for the final 21km race on December 13.

Experienced road racer Winfrida Moseti will be among the top athletes from the region at the event. She is favourite in the women’s 10kms race but faces stiff competition from Teresa Omosa and Nancy Kerage.

In the men’s category, Italy-based Dickson Simba, pacesetter Sammy Nyokaye and Areri Morang’a are expected to face off in the senior men’s race.
