Africa-Press – Kenya. Strathmore University coach Peter Mwathi said he is looking for redemption in the Super Cup after failing to win the Kenya Handball Federation national league.
The students, who finished fourth in the 19-team league, were over the weekend involved in a series of friendly matches to gauge their form ahead of the event. The tactician said the friendly matches at Kaloleni involved four teams that will take part in the two-week tournament, starting May 13.
The teams included reigning national champions National Cereals and Produce Board, Kenyatta University and Black Mamba. “We are looking forward to redeem ourselves after a season of not performing as expected,” noted the veteran tactician.
“The spirits are high and I am looking forward to the future with the new recruits, whom I feel should contribute a lot in the forthcoming season.”
During the friendly matches, Strathmore pipped NCPB 16-15 but went down 19-16 to Black Mamba before closing with a 22-16 victory over Kenyatta University.
Other matches saw Black Mamba dim Kenyatta University 17-15, NCPB tied 26-26 with Kenyatta University and Black Mamba lost 28-22 to NCPB. The Super Cup draws released by KHF will see Strathmore University play in Pool ‘B’ alongside league runners up Ulinzi and sixth-placed Kenyatta University.
Pool ‘A’ matches will involve NCPB, third-placed General Service Unit as well as Black Mamba, who were fifth in the league. Women champions Nairobi Water Queens will take on the top three of Ulinzi Sharks, NCPB and Bungoma-based Rangers. The winning teams in both categories will represent the country at the Africa Club Championships in Tunisia later in the year.
