Africa-Press – Kenya. Azimio leader Raila Odinga has castigated members of the outfit who have shifted their allegiance to the ruling Kenya Kwanza camp. Speaking on Thursday while addressing the Azimio Parliamentary Group meeting at Maanzoni in Machakos county, Raila termed the unbecoming behaviour as political prostitution.
“In the UK, it’s unthinkable that a member of the Labour party will resign and join the Torries. It does not happen, you are elected on this party mandate and you will remain a member of this party unless you are expelled from the party,” Raila said.
He said the same happens in Germany where Christian democrats and Christian socialists toe the line of their parties. “This is the direction we must go in this country. We have pre-election coalitions because of the presidential nature of our system here but you are elected as a member of a party that is a member of a coalition,” Raila said.
“It is therefore cheap, unprincipled for a political party to say after elections you are not resigning and going to join another coalition, the one you ran against. That is political prostitution.”
The ODM boss lashed out at the UDM party which decamped from the Azimio shortly after the August 9 polls. He said there was no basis for the party to have shifted its allegiance to Kenya Kwanza even before the Speaker had been elected.
“What was it that was now more attractive in Kenya Kwanza than in Azimio?” Raila asked.
“Political prostitution is something that we must turn to condemn by all civilised Kenyans.”
He said Kenya kwanza is bragging about being the majority in parliament but that is an artificial majority as the pre-coalition agreements of the defectors still stand.
“They were elected against those people, so now Mr Ruto is enjoying an artificial majority which he does not deserve and therefore we do not respect any law that are passed by that artificial majority,” Raila said.
