Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenyans who had applied for smart driving licences can now collect them from NTSA offices.
In a notice on Thursday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) called on Kenyans to collect the documents.
“We urge our esteemed clients to collect their smart driving licences from the centre identified during the application,” the notice reads.
Kenyans have been urged to carry their original Identification Cards for verification.
For more information on driving licences, the authority has asked Kenyans to visit the nearest NTSA office or send an email to [email protected].
The smart DLs are fitted with a chip, that holds the drivers’ information and a points-based system is used to encourage discipline among motorists.
Each card comes with 100 points that are deducted every time the holder commits any traffic offence. Upon reaching the threshold of 40 points, the licence is automatically cancelled.
Last month, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen directed NTSA to clear more than 50,000 pending driving licences, logbooks, and digital number plates.
“I have given NTSA two weeks to clear this backlog, notify Kenyans of their nearest collection points, and put in place the necessary mechanisms to speed up the turnaround time for processing and issuance of DLs, logbooks, and digital number plates,” he said.
As a result, NTSA adjusted its operating hours in upscaled efforts to clear the licences and number plates backlog.
In the directive given by the Authority’s director general, their offices will now operate for about 11 hours, Monday to Friday.
The offices will also remain open for eight hours, for the next two Saturdays.
In addition, NTSA called on Kenyans to take advantage of the extended working hours to collect their number plates and driving licences.
NTSA Road Safety Strategy Manager Samuel Musumba said the move to extend the working hours was due to the high demand for the new generation plates.
Under the new working hours, all NTSA Banking Halls and Offices will operate Monday to Friday, from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm.
