Africa-Press – Kenya. Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has called out people opposing President William Ruto’s Finance Bill 2023 saying they should stop lying to Kenyans.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, Baya said the government has reduced over 20 taxes and is still removing some of them.
He said that those against President Ruto’s government are trying to bring it down just as they wanted since the beginning.
“People should stop peddling lies about the Finance Bill. There is a lot of untruth being peddled out there. People are looking at Kenyans as being very gullible and that they will buy the untruth they peddle every day,” Baya said.
“I do not think Kenyans are fools to believe some of the gibberish things that are said. Some of these things are being peddled here, Kenyans need to know that people want to bring down the Kenya Kwanza manifesto, the Kenya Kwanza government just as they wanted it out from the beginning. They are still in campaign mode.”
He added that Ruto is removing some taxes on some goods since they are inhibiting growth in some sectors.
“We have removed the 8 percent VAT on gas. The railway development levy on gas has been removed. VAT on raw materials for fertilizers, VAT exemption on materials for manufacturing pharmaceuticals, and import declaration fees on gas are some of the taxes that have been removed,” Baya said.
Further, he said that those claiming that the government borrows 80 billion a week, should stop lying to Kenyans.
“It is not true that this government is borrowing 80 billion a day or a week because the increase itself on this new budget is around 80 billion for the whole financial year. So there is no way you could be borrowing 80 billion for a week in 52 weeks. That would be a mind-boggling figure. And that would be probably enough to fund this government,” Baya said.
