Africa-Press – Kenya. At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would be attending Sunday’s Club World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
FIFA, the organisation that oversees world football, also announced that it had created an office in New York’s Trump Tower.
A record 48 national teams will compete in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Many have viewed the expanded competition, which includes many of the top club clubs in the world, as a practice run for that event.
MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Jets and Giants, will host the 2026 final, and Sunday’s Club World Cup final will serve as a preview of the championship game the following year.
“I’ll be going to the game,” Trump told reporters.
The announcement was made a day after FIFA President Gianni Infantino declared that the Club World Cup trophy would be on display at Trump Tower until the championship game.
“We have received such a big support from the government and from the President with the White House Task Force for the FIFA Club World Cup (now) and for the FIFA World Cup next year,” Infantino said.
During his second term, Trump has not shied away from the enormous spotlight of sports.
In February, he became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, and in May, he announced from the Oval Office that D.C. would host the 2027 NFL Draft.
However, despite Infantino’s promises that the world will be welcomed in the United States for the quadrennial global showpiece event, his immigration crackdown and travel ban on 12 countries have raised concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The Trump administration was thinking of drastically increasing its travel restrictions by perhaps prohibiting citizens of 36 more nations from entering the United States, according to a letter that Reuters was able to get last month.
