Africa-Press – Kenya. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has defended Rigathi Gachagua, warning Jubilee Party leaders against insulting the former Deputy President.
Speaking in Murang’a on Friday afternoon, Uhuru expressed his disappointment over what he described as persistent divisive politics from a section of party members.
Uhuru, who spoke while attending a Jubilee grassroots meeting, cautioned the party members against abusive politics, urging them to instead express their views respectfully.
In a hard-hitting statement, Uhuru dared those criticising other politicians, particularly those on the opposition side, to strictly follow his directive or quit the party.
“At times, I’m saddened to see people on social media who pretend to defend the party by insulting Rigathi Gachagua and others. I don’t want that nonsense at my party. People should do their politics respectfully,” Uhuru said.
Adding, ” It’s sad that most of them are party officials and let me say this, before I hand over this party, if they continue doing so, I will not hesitate to call them out and send them packing. I don’t want to hear that ever again.”
The former Head of State, specifically, took a swipe at Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, warning him against leading other party members in attacking Gachagua.
Uhuru challenged the party leaders to focus on selling the party manifesto and mission to attract more members, instead of spending time insulting other leaders on social media.
During the meeting, Uhuru also drummed up support for former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’s ambitions for president, reiterating that he has worked with him and recognises his potential.
He, however, dismissed claims that his support for Matiang’i was personal, describing the former Interior CS as a high achiever, with his milestones evident from the last administration.
Meanwhile, Uhuru’s comments come a month after Kioni criticised Gachagua, accusing him of allegedly bullying the party’s presidential aspirant, Fred Matinga’i.
Speaking during an interview in September this year, the Jubilee Secretary General alleged that Gachagua has been trying to coerce Matiang’i to quit the party.
Kioni also claimed that the former DP was secretly working with President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections, labelling him a mole in the opposition.
