Africa-Press – Kenya. Former national champions Ulinzi Warriors defeated ind Kenyatta University ‘Pirates’ 91-70 in a Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) clash at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.
The soldiers shot off to a 34-16 first quarter lead but ran out of steam, allowing the students to take control of the next two quarters. KU went up 18-15 in the second quarter and hanged on 23-17 as the third stanza ended.
Warriors then showed their true colours with a 25-13 edge in the decisive stanza. Ulinzi, who led outscored KU in the paint, 56-36 were led by Eric Mutoro with 22 points and Churchill Odhiambo who scored another 14.
The students were led by Dolph Benedict who registered a game high 29, Ivan Ombiru shot 12 and John Jira 10.In the ladies top tie, Zetech University found Africa Nazarene University a hard nut to crack but went on to win 60-53.
The winners took a 36-26 half-time lead. “We played a good game but lost the tie because of missed free throws and unconverted lay ups,” said ANU’s coach Mike Oluoch.
“It was a close game and we came back from a slow start but they hit us with two late threes due to our poor rotation on defence.
” In lower division matches, National Bank of Kenya team also known as ‘Phoenix’ thrashed Kisii Polytechnic 104-61. Zetech University Development also notched a century as they humiliated Swift 115-10.
