Africa-Press – Kenya. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka today, September 3, hosted his colleagues from the opposition in what were said to be unity bid talks.
The leaders congregated at Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka’s (SKM) command centre in Karen, Nairobi, as opposition chiefs strive to portray a picture of unity.
The meeting, according to insiders, was meant to project an image of one united group and remove any doubts that the team is split following heightened individual campaigns.
Those in attendance include former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, ex-Interior Affairs cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua of Narc Kenya, DAP Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa, and former AG and DP leader Justin Muturi.
Former minister Mukhisa Kituyi, ex-Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, and ex-PS Torome Saitoti, who chairs the Jubilee party, were also present.
“We are united in our patriotic duty to liberate our nation. We shall get this nation back on track together. God bless Kenya,” Kalonzo and Gachagua posted a similar message on their respective Facebook pages after the meeting.
The meeting just came a week after Gachagua declared that he will contest for the presidency.
The launch of DCP and the campaign to have it as the most preferred in Mt Kenya region has ruffled feathers, with Muturi coming out to openly castigate the move.
“We need honest leaders. Our Constitution says Kenya shall be a multiparty democratic state. You have the right and freedom to start your own party, but when you do, don’t start abusing others. Every citizen has the right to belong to a political party of their choice under Article 38, and no one can take that away from you,” Muturi said last weekend.
During the meeting, sources said the leaders encouraged each other to continue strengthening their parties even as they continue to talk about a possible joint ticket to take on President William Ruto in 2027.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka said the meeting was meant to iron out emerging issues such as the possibility of holding joint rallies or continue with individual campaigns.
He said that meeting was also supposed to deliberate on a planned tour to Kisii next Monday by the opposition chiefs.
“This was an in-house meeting of the leaders to iron out emerging issues on their unity. It was also meant to agree on the forthcoming tour to Kisii next week on the 8th,” Onyonka said, adding that the opposition chiefs are united in making Ruto a one-term president.
Among the key agendas that the opposition leaders discussed were the war on graft, especially the issues surrounding SHA, and the alleged presence of Jubaland forces in Mandera County.
“There is something fundamentally wrong with the state of Kenya under the existing regime. Every Kenyan has the right to be heard anywhere in the country. No one can claim to own Kenya. As WPF, we demand that security is provided to all citizens without discrimination,” Kalonzo said on Tuesday.
