Africa-PressKenya. Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu can have a sigh of relief after being saved from a looming auction.

A Kiambu Court issued orders on Tuesday, April 13, barring a quick loans dealer from selling his two luxury vehicles owned by the former county boss over a Ksh10 million debt he had defaulted on.

Waititu rushed to the court on Monday, April 12 after the two vehicles were seized by the lender on the basis that they had been used as collateral.

In court papers, the embattled politician had sought the lender to be barred from aggressively pursuing the loan arguing that he had hit a rough patch.

He wanted to be given more time arguing that since a graft case had been opened against him, he was spending most of his earnings on legal fees.

“Due to current financial constraints I am facing, I am unable to clear the said loan within the afore-stated period but I hasten to add that with a lot of difficulties coupled with the fact that I am facing numerous cases before an anti-corruption court, which has incurred me a lot of costs and expenses by hiring advocates,” he argued.

It is said that he was impeached and charged two days after the loan had been approved.

The former county boss was impeached in December 2019 by the Kiambu County Assembly over abuse of office and the decision was upheld by the Senate in January 2020.

He is also facing an embezzlement case in which he was accused of misappropriating over Ksh588 million public funds.

In a recent interview, he maintained that he was not corrupt and that no money was lost under his watch.

“I never thought I would be impeached. There were people who assumed I was fighting the President. They produced the case.

“In the Kiambu case, no money was lost. The contractor was not paid even after completing 60% of the job,” explained Waititu.

The prosecution claimed that some of the misappropriated funds had been stashed in bank accounts belonging to his wife and daughters.
