Africa-Press – Kenya. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has criticised opposition leaders for what he termed as “false claims” regarding the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.
He dismissed assertions that none of the NADCO recommendations had been acted upon, pointing to the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as a key example.
Speaking on Sunday, Wandayi said some political leaders who attended Beryl Odinga’s burial ceremony, including longtime allies who have previously worked with them, made statements that were factually incorrect and risked misleading the public.
“A number of our political friends who have walked with us in the past came to condole with us, notably Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former CS Eugene Wamalwa, and they made a number of claims that are factually incorrect,” he said.
“The claims that nothing has been implemented from the NADCO report are false. We know from the NADCO recommendations that we currently have an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in place. That IEBC that we have currently was put in place through a selection panel in which sat a nominee from the opposition.”
Wandayi urged political leaders to engage in honest discourse, insisting that national dialogue should be grounded in truth rather than political convenience.
“As leaders, let us be honest and truthful. Don’t come with lies come slowly and be truthful,” he added.
The NADCO report, which emerged from bipartisan talks, outlined a series of electoral, governance, and economic reforms.
Implementation of its recommendations has remained a contentious subject between government and opposition factions.
The Opposition leaders asked the government to speed up the implementation of the NADCO report, stating that compensation to the victims of protests should start.
The team tasked with overseeing the deal signed by President William Ruto and late ODM leader Raila Odinga completed a three-day workshop to review its progress
The Committee on Implementation of the 10-point agenda and NADCO report, (COIN-10), says it is assuring Kenyans that it will finalize public engagement to address the issues raised within the scheduled time.
ODM and UDA were represented in the session by their executive directors, Oduor Ongwen and Nicodemus Bore, respectively.
The team was mandated to address a number of issues that Kenyans were raising on governance, rule of law, electoral integrity, strengthening of devolution, and fostering unity and cohesion among the people.
The team is also seeking the establishment and entrenchment of state offices that include the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition and the Office of the Prime Minister.
The COIN-10 pledged to work with Dr. Oburu Oginga, who has since assumed the role of ODM leader and co-principal, to ensure the Accord is fully implemented.
The Committee, in a communique issued by its chairperson, Dr. Agnes Zani, after a three-day stocktaking meeting at Maanzoni Resort in Machakos County, said it will continue engaging Kenyans to get their views on the implementation process and resolution of its mandate.
