Africa-Press – Kenya. Chess Kenya president Bernard Wanjala is looking forward to a successful national chess championship to be held between December 26 and30 at Charter Hall, Nairobi. The event will be the first phase of the qualifiers for next year’s All Africa Games in Ghana. Wanjala noted that the event is open.
“This will be the first phase of the qualification process. I want to invite all individuals who play chess. They can use this platform to gauge themselves and who knows…,” Wanjala said.
“Everything is going on well. We are just waiting for the Christmas holiday to end.”
The top 24 players in the event will proceed to the second phase and from where the top seven will be selected to proceed to the final phase of the qualifiers.
The second phase will be held from January 13 to 15 next year and it will be a six round Swiss System tournament. The national senior and junior champions in the open and women’s section will be automatically seeded into the final phase.
The top two most highly-rated players in the two sections will also automatically qualify for the final. Wanjala said the final phase will be played from January 25 to 29 in a round-robin format.
Meanwhile, Wanjala called upon the private sector to tap in and support chess players living with disabilities ahead of next year’s Olympiad for people with disabilities to be held from January 29 to February 6 in Belgrade, Serbia.
“At the moment, the players are taking the sport with a lot of seriousness. However, they lack adequate resources even as they prepare for the Olympiad,” said Wanjala.
