Africa-Press – Kenya. Political tension is brewing within Nairobi County after MCAs launched a scathing attack on city-based MPs, accusing them of hijacking presidential functions and sidelining ward representatives.
During a heated plenary session, the MCAs, led by Majority Leader Peter Imwatok, called out what they termed as “arrogance and exclusion” by some MPs—particularly from ODM—in engagements involving President William Ruto.
“We are not lesser leaders; we must be respected,” declared Imwatok.
“Some of our colleagues in Parliament behave as if they are the only ones who deserve the President’s attention. We shall expose you to the end.”
Imwatok pointed fingers at three MPs, accusing them of sabotaging efforts by Nairobi MCAs to build a relationship with the President.
He warned that the Assembly would not hesitate to take unspecified political action if the alleged sidelining continues.
According to the MCAs, MPs—working in conjunction with a section of President Ruto’s protocol handlers—have humiliated them during official functions.
The ward reps claim they are often excluded from key events, only to be replaced by what they described as “political brokers.”
“We must be treated with dignity, Mr Speaker. We shall not allow these MPs to demean us in the name of the ‘big boys syndrome.’ The dignity of this House and its Honourable Members must be protected,” Imwatok added.
The MCAs requested Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Ken Ng’ondi to facilitate a direct meeting between themselves and President William Ruto.
They believe such a forum would offer them a platform to raise ward-level concerns and reaffirm their relevance in the governance of the capital city.
“We are calling upon you, Speaker, to please move with speed and initiate our meeting with the President. It will be the best opportunity to air out our views and issues affecting our wards. We are not going to deal with brokers anymore,” said Imwatok.
