Africa-Press – Kenya. Muslim leaders have commended Azimio leader Raila Odinga for accepting the Supreme Court ruling and conceding defeat.
The leaders under the umbrella of Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims on Tuesday termed the move as an act of maturity and statesmanship, noting that the gesture will pave way for a peaceful transition.
“We thank God for you. You chose to pursue your electoral grievances through the justice system in our country. You accepted an unfavorable ruling based on your prayers to court,” Supkem National chairman Al-Hajj Hassan Ole Naado said.
The leaders further congratulated President-elect William Ruto and his running mate Rigathi Gachagua.
Naado said they have demonstrated to the country that politics is competition and not hostility, adding that they have stayed calm and resilient in the midst of strong winds against them in the campaign period.
“This election has demonstrated the importance of strengthening, ring fencing and protecting independent institutions as established in our constitution,” he said.
“Although more needs to be done, this election celebrates the achievement we have made. It is their independence that has secured the dignity, sanctity, legitimacy and security of elections.”
Naado has further commended IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati over what he termed as standing by his oath and discharging his duty, despite the heavy burden placed on his shoulders.
Supkem also commended the Supreme Court for the firmness and forthrightness in its judgment in the presidential election petition and President Uhuru Kenyatta for ensuing peace prevails in the country.
