Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has said the country is focusing on an International Financial System that will align with the reality and imperative of the current moment. He was speaking during the third regional symposium on greening judiciaries.
“We are not saying we want International Financial System that is favorable to Africans only, we want one that is favorable to everyone in all parts of the world,” he said.
Ruto said the current configuration is not sustainable anymore, for either IMF, World bank, or other institutions. “Having a fair international system is not asking for too much, we want to access development resources at the same rate that everyone is accessing, ” the President added.
On matters of climate change, Ruto said there is good reason for Africa’s institutions and leadership to drive the agenda of mitigating its effects and eliminating the human activity driving it.
“The first reason is the fact that Africa is, by far, the least polluting continent, yet it is by far, the most adversely affected by climate change,” Ruto said.
“The entirety of industrial and economic activity from all of the continent’s economies contributes less than 5% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.”
The head of state further added that gas emissions are the cause of a steady and dangerous rise in global temperatures, which have resulted in the extinction of plant and animal species, rise in sea levels, disruption in climatic patterns, drought, and desertification.
