Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has opened up on Kenya’s relationship with China and the US but remained reserved on which he prefers most as a trade partner.
Ruto said Kenya partners with foreign countries that are ready to offer opportunities.
The President was speaking in an interviwe with CNN’s Richard Quest on Friday who sought to know which between China or the US he prefers to work with.
“You’ll forgive me but I will just put it straight foward in good blunt terms. If a choice is made between investment by China and United States and companies, which would you prefer?” Quest asked.
Ruto said the conversation on which country Kenya chooses to invest with has been brought up several times.
He said Kenya is putting her focus where her resources are most needed to create opportunities for its people and Africa at large.
“People want to pull us to a conversation on whether we are facing East or we are facing West. We are neither facing West nor East, we are facing forward where opportunities are,” Ruto said.
The President said that Kenya and other African countries are committing their assets to where opportunities are.
“We are working in a manner to make sure that opportunities are unlocked,” he said.
“In Kenya, 90 per cent of our grid is green, which is why we are working with Microsoft to put together the first-ever gigawatt data centre, we are looking at where our opportunities are to create jobs, create wealth and take Kenya as well as Africa in the same direction.”
During his four-day state visit to the US, the Ruto managed to woo investors into investing in Kenya and witnessed the signing of several bilateral agreements.
The President urged investors in the United States to partner with Kenya for the benefit of both countries.
He said Kenya has a strong economic interest and promising collaborations in trade and investment with US businesses.
“I want to affirm your confidence in entering or expanding your cooperation in our market and to ask and answer the question; what can we do for you and what can we do together?’ he said.
Ruto said that Kenya is committed to eradicating unemployment, poverty, hunger, disease and inequalities through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
He said this will allow the country to focus on effective strategies to deliver rapid and inclusive growth and enhance productivity.
