Africa-Press – Kenya. Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru says he does not miss the trappings of power associated with top government positions.
Mucheru said he has been living a peaceful and enjoyable life ever since he handed over the position to Eliud Owalo on October 28.
“Today, I drive myself and I have no issue waiting in line. Where I am rushing to? When I was in the office, there were many things to do, people waiting for me and meetings to address. Today, I do not have all that,” he explained.
Mucheru however said most of the power associated with Cabinet positions is not real but perceived.
He said people tend to believe a Cabinet Secretary is very powerful because they fly flags on their official cars and are always in meetings with diplomats and even Heads of State.
“A lot of the power is perception. It is not real,” he told Citizen TV in an interview aired on Saturday.
Mucheru further revealed that he no longer moves around with bodyguards.
“I do not miss that security. I have not wronged anyone. I am back to default settings and it is peaceful,” he added.
Mucheru further stated that a Cabinet position gives people the impression the holder of the office is able to handle any matter that concerns them.
“They come to you for everything and you are supposed to get it done. I used to get calls from friends who want something, say, from Defence and when I tell them that is not my ministry they tell me I can make calls and get it done,” he added.
Mucheru noted that life has been smooth and quiet since he handed over the office.
“When you meet people they are not pushing you for this or that. It is quite nice. It is very relaxing because you can now discuss other things,” he added.
Mucheru further revealed people used to believe he was selfish when he did not do what they wanted.
“When a CS, people think you can solve all their problems because of your association with the President and other high-ranking officials in government.”
