Why I'll not abandon Kenya's transformation agenda – Ruto

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has insisted that he will not abandon Kenya’s transformation agenda, despite criticism.

Speaking on Sunday during his New Year’s remarks, Ruto said that he is creating a new political culture for Kenya, where there will be no more excuses to abandon the country’s development.

He said that it is also time critics started changing their minds and getting used to this new way of doing things.

“For the record, we are breaking new ground and charting a new political culture for Kenya.

“Instead of excuses to abandon our nation’s transformation, I invite the skeptics, opponents, and the indifferent to change their perspective and embrace our new paradigm shift to pursue inclusive growth, with a sense of urgency, where leaders say what they mean and mean what they say,” Ruto said.

The President added that he understands that Kenya has a history of political leaders reneging on their promises once they get into office but this will not be the case with his leadership.

Ruto said that it is in this context that he understood calls by some leaders to him not to honour some of the commitments on account that they were too difficult to achieve.

“I acknowledge that we do not have a strong history of commitment to positive transformation, or a culture of consistent promise-keeping in our political leadership.

“This may explain why many anticipated that this administration would abandon the commitments we made under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.”

In May 2023, Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit urged the government to re-strategise on the delivery of promises they made during the campaign period.

He insisted that it was time for the current administration to be realistic with what can be achieved.

Sapit said the government should focus on prioritising promises they could deliver and overlook those they cannot.

“I know you made heavy promises during campaigns and we knew most of them were unrealistic. If you followed the promises of Azimio and Kenya Kwanza at that time, it was like whoever wins by October, Kenya looked like a little heaven because the promises were so heavy it seemed like everything was sorted out.

“It is now a moment to face the truth. Come out and tell Kenyans the promises we made are unrealistic let us go to prioritisation… If we try to push to achieve what we promised, and we all know we have nothing to deliver the promises then you are going to break everybody’s back. You’ll even break your back,” Sapit said.
